Wellcome Collection

A weird and wonderful museum

Wellcome Collection is a combined museum and library with interactive exhibitions and is advertised as “the free destination for the incurably curious. Wellcome Collection is part of the Wellcome Trust, founded by the pharmacist and collector Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome (1853–1936) who was fascinated by the art and science of healing throughout the ages. On his death, his will established a charity for the advancement of medical and scientific research to improve mankind’s wellbeing.

Founded in 2007, The Wellcome Collection now attracts over 700,000 visitors per year. Its exhibitions and public events explore the connections between medicine, life and art. The venue offers contemporary and historic exhibitions and the Wellcome Library provides access to collections of books, films and pictures on the history of medicine from the earliest times to the present day.

A £17.5 million development project by architects Wilkinson Eyre opened up even more areas of the building to the public, including two new galleries and the beautiful Reading Room. The Reading Room is an innovative hybrid of a gallery, library and event space with a mezzanine, natural light and beautiful chandeliers by Dutch design studio Vij5. The refurbishment was to highlight the venue as a destination of choice.
